Problem Solving & Decision Making

Programme overview:

This practical one-day programme introduces learners to a structured approach for approaching significant problems which they encounter. They will consider the different stages in the problem-solving process for the use of logic and the use of creativity. Learners will also understand the main criteria upon which decisions are based plus how to control and monitor implementation of a solution. Much of the programme will be based around practical activities in which learners are able to use a variety of techniques that have been introduced to them.

This unit can be attended either as a stand-alone programme or as a module within a wider leadership development programme. This programme is delivered in-person due to the nature of the practical activities. However, an abridged half day programme can be delivered online.

Topics covered:

  • The importance of logic and creativity in approaching problems in a structured way

  • Techniques for analysing the potential causes of problem and identifying the root cause

  • Techniques for generating and selecting the most effective solution which meets the criteria

  • How to control, monitor and review the success of the solution

Following participation, learners will be able to:

  • Recognise the various stages and sequencing of approaching a problem from a professional perspective

  • Understand how logic and creativity are both potentially used in a structured approach to problem solving

  • Define the nature, scope and impact of a problem prior to analysing it and generating solutions

  • Practice and subsequently use a range of tools and techniques for analysing the root cause of problems

  • Practice and subsequently use a range of tools and techniques for generating and deciding upon solutions to problems

  • Understand the criteria and approach which enables the success of the solution to be monitored and reviewed

  • Recognise the methods and techniques (quantitative and qualitative) which can be used to monitor the outcomes

  • Take appropriate follow-up action(s) depending upon the success or otherwise of the implemented solution
